Common Causes of Roof Leaks

A leaky roof can provide a lot of damage to your home. Here are some possible causes of roof leaks.

Damaged Shingles - Cracked shingles can easily be the cause of your leaks, especially when it is old. Roofs built over 30 years ago were made of less durable materials so if you have an older home, be sure to check your roof for damaged shingles.

Roof Flashing - This is the thin metal sheet or fitting that covers the seam of your roof. The roof flashing is one of the common areas where leaks can occur since it can corrode over time.

Plumbing and Vents - When you need to drill holes in your roof for plumbing vents, pipes, exhaust ducts, be sure these are done properly. A cracked or worn flashing around these vents and pipes may cause leaks on your roof as it ages.

Check your Skylight - If you have a skylight in your home, especially an old one, be sure to check this for leaks. If it starts to slope downwards, it may be filling up with water more easily and can cause leaks.
