How To Prepare Your Roof For a Hurricane

There is no question that a hurricane can cause significant damage to properties. With winds rotating at least 73 mph, hurricanes are usually accompanied by thunder and lighting and rain.

Before a hurricane hits, it is important to get yourself and your family prepared. Just as important is preparing your roof for any possible wind and rain damage.

Inspect your landscaping. Be sure to trim the shrubs and tree branches around your home so they don't end up being debris on your roof.

On your roof, check for loose, curled or missing shingles or roof tiles. Check the edges of your roof as these are potential weak spots during high winds.

Clean out your rain gutters and downspouts. Move all your supplies stored outside indoors to prevent damage. Also inspect your roof drains and piping to ensure they are clear of debris and in good condition.

During a hurricane, stay indoors and away from windows and glass doors. Your safety is the most important thing so don't be tempted to check your roof during severe weather.

After the hurricane has subsided, check the weather before inspecting your roof. Make sure you do your inspection on a sunny day. If you notice any damage or debris on your roof, contact a professional roofer to help you assess the damage.
